SUMMARY:Case Studies in School Culture: Problems and Pitfalls in School Discipline
DESCRIPTION:May a school legally ask a student to “just leave” if they are acting up? Or ask parents to keep students home for the day? What is the difference between time out and seclusion? In this session\, we explore these questions and similar ones. Code of conduct violations and disciplinary consequences DO impact overall school culture. Join us for a lively discussion of cases and consequences. This session is intended especially for assistant principals\, deans\, or others who deal regularly with student discipline and culture.

DESCRIPTION:Which metrics really matter at the high school level? Drop out recovery schools and traditional high schools are held to accountability standards including graduation rates\, state test passage rates\, progress measures\, and post-secondary success indicators. How may each of these measures be used formatively and summative to help improve outcomes? In addition\, what other measures are significant as we critically examine whether or not our schools are meeting their mission.

SUMMARY:WRITING IN THE SECONDARY NON-ELA CLASSROOM
DESCRIPTION:Literacy is everyone’s responsibility. Reading\, Writing\, Speaking\, and Listening are skills we want all of our students to master for their futures. We know from statewide OST writing scores that secondary students are not being exposed to the types of writing that exist in the adult world. However\, non-ELA teachers feel uncomfortable teaching writing when that hasn’t been part of their teacher preparation program. This session will allay those fears because there are some simple\, “do it tomorrow” strategies that can be used in math\, science\, social studies\, art\, physical education\, and world languages. We will also discuss easy assessment ideas which do not take an English degree to master.
